How to graduate

Candidates for the Bachelor's degree in Chemistry (L-27) will present their thesis following the guidelines published on the University's website (https://web.unipv.it/come-procedere-con-la-domanda-di-laurea/).

Thesis Preparation:
The student will present a 20-page written thesis, resulting from a bibliographic research on a topic proposed by a professor in chemical or a related field. It will also be possible to carry out a brief experimental activity related to the topic agreed upon with the professor. In the case of external internships, the thesis can focus on the internship activities, without changing the current discipline. The supervisor will provide guidance on the logical structure of the thesis, periodically checking the progress of the work.
The thesis must be written in Italian.
In order to ensure a more balanced distribution of candidates among professors, each professor will supervise a maximum of 5 bachelor's candidates per academic year. Meetings between students and professors will take place at the beginning of the third year to facilitate initial contact.

The thesis will consist of a non-editable PDF file to be submitted to the Student Secretariat by uploading it online through the reserved area, within the deadlines for graduation exam registration. Additionally, 3 (or 4) copies (also in PDF format) should be provided to the Supervisor and the members of the Examination Committee at least 7 days before the exam date. In the case of external internships, an additional copy of the thesis must be given to the company supervisor, as co-supervisor. The printed copies are for personal use only.

Exam Procedure:
The exam will be conducted by a committee of 3-4 members (from at least two disciplines), with no more than 4 candidates assigned to each committee. To optimize the duration of the session, committees may work in parallel.
The exam consists of an interview lasting a maximum of 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for the candidate's thesis presentation and the remaining 10 minutes for discussion with the committee. During the interview, the committee will evaluate the written thesis, with particular attention given to the candidate's ability to produce bibliographic information and the level of understanding of the topic.

Graduation Grade:
The graduation grade is determined by adding up to 8 points to the weighted average of exam grades, with a value of 31 assigned to a grade of 30 with honors, and excluding extra exams. Of these 8 points, 3 are proposed by the Supervisor and 5 by the Committee. If the final grade is 115 or higher (not rounded), the Supervisor can request the award of honors, which must be voted unanimously by the Committee.

In-Person Exam:
The candidate must send the PowerPoint presentation to the committee chair, who will upload it to the classroom computer. It is also recommended to bring a backup copy on a USB stick.
The proclamation will take place immediately after the discussion.
The committee and the invitation, including the scheduled time details, will be available in the reserved area once confirmed.

Remote Exam:
Send ONLY TO THE CHAIR:

  • Skype address
  • Phone number, in case of connection failure
  • PDF copy of the presentation slides (to be used in case the connection fails)
  • Declaration of acceptance of the remote graduation session (Only to the Chair and the academic secretariat in one email).
[The declaration is a simple email stating: "I, the undersigned, … declare that I accept the remote graduation session on [date] at [time]. Sincerely, [name and surname as a signature."]

The candidate must:

  • Set up a station to connect via Skype with video, audio, and the presentation to share
  • Connect via Skype using the link at least 15 minutes before the start of the first presentation
  • Have an identification document available

The connection will be tested with the chair at least 20 minutes before the session starts.

The proclamation will take place immediately after the discussion.

Each candidate is allowed 2 additional Skype addresses to view the live session. They must invite them at the time of the discussion and the proclamation.

The committee and the invitation, including the scheduled time details, will be available in the reserved area once confirmed.
